Ah, yes, work... the economy! Everyday, billions of people get up in the early hours of the morning to go out and work so that they can make a living for themselves and their families. Maybe you even have a student job so that you can afford to buy some things for yourself. But what if you had to work all day and still made so little money that you could hardly afford to buy food? Some people face that reality daily. Like we saw earlier, there are currently still hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty, that means they make less than $1.25 per day!
The UN wants to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth. This means providing decent work for everyone on earth. That would mean that no one must work for just over a dollar per day anymore. Wouldn’t that be great?
I think the world would be a fairer place, what do you think? The United Nations wants to achieve this goal by diversifying the economies of developing nations. This means that they want to make more different kinds of jobs available to people and, by doing so, create more wealth from the bottom up.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 has considerably slowed down their efforts as well. It is estimated that, during the pandemic, 1.6 billion people risk losing their source of income. We also see that the entire global economy is slowing down due to the pandemic. The UN reports that the world now faces the worst economic recession since the great depression in the 1930s. For example, it is reported that in 2020 the global GDP declined by 4.2%.
Work will be a very important part of your future(s) life. Therefore you need now to make the right decisions and study choices, so later on you could achieve your dream job. By working you will help to boost the economy and this would create even more jobs! All people are already working together to tackle extreme poverty and provide decent work. Let’s hope that you can help the United Nations to achieve its goals by contributing to the economy in the futures!
