Electricity, isn’t it great!? I love some good electricity. It charges my batteries and it more than likely also powers your house and all the things inside it. Take your computer for instance: if you did not have electricity you probably wouldn’t be able to play videogames with your friends! But things like cooking food would also become very difficult. If the stove does not work, you would need to build a fire to cook your food! That doesn’t seem very useful to me. What do you think? What would it be like to live in a place where there is no available electricity?

The United Nations has set out to ensure that everyone on earth has access to reliable, modern energy services by 2030. Broadly speaking, they are working hard to achieve this goal. In 2010, 83% of the global population had access to electricity, in 2018 this had risen to 90%! But even though this is good news, there is lots of work that still needs to be done. According to data gathered in 2018,
789 million people still lacked reliable access to electricity. That is more than all the people in the continent of Europe combined! Naturally, the UN is also concerned about the environment and so they aim to increase the use of renewable energy sources. From 2010 to 2017 the amount of investment in clean energy in developing nations more than doubled to $21.4 billion!

Do you know much about renewable energy? Maybe your parents installed a solar panel on the roof of your home or I’m pretty sure that you have seen the big wind turbines somewhere near you. For now, it may seem to be pretty far in the futures but you could also make use of renewable energy sources. Imagine yourself when you are 30 years old. Where will you be working? How does your dream house look like and is there a place for a solar panel? What is your dream car? Is it electric or does it use biofuels? Those are all things that you should take into consideration, in order to save the environment!
