You’ve probably been hungry before, after a long day at the beach, running around and swimming in the water. But in the end, you are always sure you’ll be able to have something to fill your hungry belly. Maybe a pancake or a waffle from one of the local shops.
However, having easy access to food is not a given for everyone on earth. Many people today still face the very real possibility that they will not be able to put food on the table. Do you think it could one day be possible to end world hunger? What might that look like?
The UN seeks to end hunger and ensure access to food for all people by 2030. They focus especially on those people who have very little money and find themselves in difficult situations. For instance, think of the people in Yemen who are trying to survive in one of the poorest nations on earth in the middle of a vicious civil war.
In order to achieve this goal, they are trying to teach farmers in developing countries how they can improve the production of their crops. Next to that, the United Nations also has emergency relief programmes, where food is brought to places that desperately need it (like Yemen, Somalia or South Sudan). The UN distributes this food for free to try to prevent innocent civilians from starving due to the food shortages created by the war.
Although the UN focuses on providing food for free to places that desperately need it, I'm sure that there are a lot of people near you that also need food, but the help from the UN doesn't get to them. Here you could have an importing role and provide food for them. Maybe your mom or dad did groceries and came home with brands that you don't like? Now some of that food may just be stored in the kitchen. As you may not be willing to eat it, there are plenty of people that may be willing to do it. You may have to consider donating that food. By using the internet, you could find the nearest food bank location. There you could donate the additional or remaining food that you may have. This way, you could influence your local community and tackle hunger.
